Dr Tony O'Sullivan is a general practitioner at Irishtown
Health Centre in Dublin, Ireland, and a member of the Irish College of General
Practitioners' Diabetes Task Group, having been its director from 1999-2003. Dr
O'Sullivan also currently serves as the chairman of the Diabetes Federation of
Ireland and previously was the vice-chairman of a National Expert Committee on
diabetes care, which was charged with putting together a report, Diabetes
Care - Securing the Future , in response to the St Vincent Declaration. In addition, Dr O'Sullivan works for the Irish College of General Practitioners as course tutor in its Distance Learning Certificate course in diabetes.
In the international arena, Dr O'Sullivan is the president-elect of the International Diabetes Federation, European Region. Actively involved in numerous other diabetes and primary care organizations, he has been an international advocate for improved care for patients with this condition for the past decade. Since 1995 Dr O'Sullivan has written and and broadcast widely on health issues in the public media.
Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in his youth, Dr O'Sullivan is well acquainted with the challenges faced by both patients and their healthcare providers. From a professional viewpoint, his aim is to reduce inequalities in diabetes care, principally through enhancing the skills of primary care practitioners. His priorities include helping these healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive diabetes care, improving access to diabetes care in rural areas and ensuring quality diabetes care even in resource-limited regions.
