This is A. He is a 56-year old bank teller from Scotland,
and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 3 years ago. He is
5 feet 7 inches (1.7 metres) tall and weighs 207 lb (94 kg).
Although A has not developed any apparent complications of
diabetes, he feels that his treatment is 'not working' because
he has continued to gain weight, despite having made dietary
modifications. A's family doctor has agreed to refer him to
a diabetologist, as he feels that more specialised care will
benefit A, especially with regard to any changes in medication
that may be necessary.
A has been on NPH insulin for one year (60 U before breakfast).
Previous to this he was taking glimepiride, 4 mg/day, for
2 years. During this time, he has gained 3 kg in weight.
