D is 31 years old and lives in Perugia, Italy. She was diagnosed
as having Type 1 diabetes at the age of 12. She works as an
executive secretary in a small company, and enjoys her job.
She married a year ago, and recently became pregnant. She
is 5 feet 6 inches (1.68 metres) tall, and at Week 8 of gestation
she weighs 136 lb (62 kg). Her pre-pregnancy weight was 133
lb (60.5 kg).
D's treatment regimen is insulin injections three times per
day (regular at breakfast and lunch, premixed equal parts
of short- and intermediate-acting insulin at dinner), but
the doses are frequently changed according to her variations
in food consumption, and unscheduled exercise. The resultant
overall glycaemic control is very unstable.
