Literature Compendium

Current Concepts in Type 2 Diabetes

Volume 3
Special Considerations in the Management of Diabetes and Its Complications

Introduction From the Co-Editors

Jaime A. Davidson
Alistair Emslie-Smith

This compendium is the third in a series of 3 volumes presenting the foundational literature that demonstrates fundamental understandings related to Type 2 diabetes. The first compendium presented key literature on the pathogenesis of diabetes and the need for tight glycaemic control and lifestyle intervention. The second compendium presented key literature discussing the appropriate application of oral pharmacological therapy, non-insulin injectable agents, and insulin in the management of Type 2 diabetes.

This compendium presents key literature on special considerations in the management of diabetes and its complications, including the diagnosis and management of global cardiovascular risk factors in individuals with Type 2 diabetes (Chapters 1 and 2), management of diabetic complications (diabetic peripheral neuropathy, retinopathy, and nephropathy) and diabetic foot care (Chapter 3), and management of diabetes in pregnancy (Chapter 4). The key literature includes evidence-based guidelines, key studies, and recent reviews.

Articles are reprinted in their entirety with commentary from the editors.* It is our hope that the reader will review the commentaries and study the literature to gain a better understanding of the importance of treating Type 2 diabetes and reducing the complications of this devastating disease.

*Note: articles are reprinted in their entirety in the printed version of the compendium. If you would like to be contacted when the printed volume is available, please e-mail WorldWIDE at worldwide@worldwidediabetes.org.
