Diabetes educators may be healthcare professionals, most often
nurses, dietitians, pharmacists and social workers. Physicians,
psychologists and physical therapists may also refer to themselves
as diabetes educators, if they have a specific interest in diabetes.
Lay people, who have had training in teaching and in diabetes
management, can also be diabetes educators.
Diabetes educators can obtain certification in some countries,
which may require completion of a course and an examination.
Examinations are administered by Certification Boards that
are specific to each country. Associations such as the American
Association of Diabetes Educators can also provide a number
of data capture tools to measure diabetes education outcomes.
