Diabetes education world map

Diabetes education can be provided in a number of different institutions, depending on the needs and resources available in the region.

For example, in Canada, Diabetes Education Centres are almost entirely funded through hospitals. The actual centre may be in the hospital or off-site but close by. Historically, in the US, diabetes education was primarily provided in the inpatient hospital setting. However, with managed care and the impetus for outpatient services, diabetes care and education are now promoted in the outpatient setting.

The Caribbean is an example of where diabetes education is carried out primarily through the local diabetes associations. Programmes are underway to train both professional and lay educators in several Caribbean countries.

In other parts of the world, diabetes education can be provided in local pharmacies or by home care nurses in the individual's home. Diabetes education also be provided in private hospitals, community centres or offered by private practitioners.
