Following annual review of foot problems, people with diabetes can be categorised into risk groups – low, moderate and high risk. This categorisation is based upon examination and assessment of the person with diabetes [International Diabetes Federation (European Region), 1999].

Low risk:

  No impairment of touch, pain, temperature or pressure; no evidence of neuropathy.

Moderate risk:

 
Any of the following:
deformity.
self-care problem.
simple skin problem.

High risk:

 
Any of the following:
neuropathy.
vascular disease.
previous ulcer.
Charcot foot.
