Patients who have posterior vitreous detachment may develop haemorrhages between the retina and the hyaloid. Such patients cannot undergo laser photocoagulation.

Patients with an opaque capsule as a result of a dense cataract are also not able to undergo laser photocoagulation, since the opacity will obscure the view of the retina.
